Kitronik is a premier UK-based electronics and educational technology retailer supplying a worldwide network of makers, school classrooms, and industrial distributors. At the technical helm is Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, who oversees product development alongside the brand’s expansive e-commerce operations. Managing a fast-moving catalog of complex technical components to an international audience requires an underlying web infrastructure that is incredibly fast, highly scalable, and robust.
Seeking to escape unresponsive customer support and a rigid ecosystem on Shopify, Kitronik migrated its high-volume storefront to WooCommerce. Kitronik was then referred to BigScoots by Woo.
While the move restored operational control, an immediate international barrier emerged. Standard multi-currency setups triggered a 2% cross-border transaction fee that directly eroded their lean distributor margins and created severe order reconciliation backlogs in Xero. Furthermore, off-the-shelf currency plugins injected uncacheable cookies that crippled site performance.
The BigScoots Website Maintenance & Engineering team was able to bypass these limitations entirely with custom-built solution. They built a bespoke, client-side Woo Local Pricing Display Plugin that renders real-time localized price estimates while preserving pristine edge caching and enforcing GBP checkouts designed to avoid the additional cross-border fee. The custom solution successfully neutralized profit leaks, protected Core Web Vitals, and granted Geoff total operational peace of mind.
The Breaking Point with Shopify
For several years, Kitronik operated its storefront on Shopify. While the platform provided an entry point into international sales, the business eventually encountered severe, unyielding roadblocks with platform support and rigid ecosystem configurations. This decline in technical support stems from a broader industry shift toward mass outsourcing.
“To be fair to Shopify, they were really good in the first few years. The support was brilliant because it was based in the UK. But about four years back, it all got outsourced overseas. You just ended up with people that didn’t know what they were doing and weren’t allowed to escalate tickets. When you’ve got a really complicated e-commerce website, you don’t move that overnight.”
– Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, Kitronik
The breaking point for Kitronik arrived when a site issue sparked a support ticket that remained completely unresolved for over two years. Geoff Hampson realized the rigid platform could no longer support their complex e-commerce needs, serving as the primary trigger to migrate.
The Journey to BigScoots: Consultation with Woo
Determined to regain control over their catalog, data, and software architecture, Geoff began seeking structural alternatives. Due to the high transactional financial volumes Kitronik generated on Shopify, Geoff consulted directly with WooCommerce to outline an optimized migration framework.
Initially, the staging environment was established on standard WordPress hosting to facilitate baseline plugin and layout configurations cheaply. However, the out-of-the-box infrastructure lacked the raw processing speeds required for standard web deployment.
“I’d had a chat with their AI bot sometime earlier about how fast it was going to be… it was a cheap way to do all the staging before we went live, but it obviously wasn’t going to be the live solution just because it would have meant a slower response to the customer. Search engines don’t necessarily take kindly to slower page load speeds.”
– Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, Kitronik
Woo had a suggestion. Knowing Kitronik had reached a point where unresolved issues and surface-level fixes were no longer acceptable, Woo directly introduced Geoff to BigScoots, not simply because of our enterprise-grade architecture, but because of our approach to partnership.
Woo knew our team has a reputation for embedding alongside clients, digging into root causes, and staying engaged until problems are actually resolved rather than worked around or masked. Combined with infrastructure specifically tuned to support high-volume WooCommerce application layer demands, BigScoots represented an opportunity not just for better performance, but for a team committed to ownership and long-term resolution.
“Having worked with BigScoots on a few client engagements, I’ve really appreciated their consultative approach to finding and engineering unique solutions, while staying actively involved day in and day out to make sure their customers are successful. Their hands-on approach and level of service made them a perfect fit to help Kitronik overcome this challenge”
– Beau Lebens, Artistic Director/Lead, Woo.
Initial Onboarding and Partnering for Maintenance
Geoff’s initial discussions with Scott Stapley (CEO and Co-Founder of BigScoots) focused explicitly on hardware orchestration, migration logistics, and baseline server capacity. Kitronik onboarded purely as a hosting client, but Geoff quickly recognized that he was spending 10 to 15 hours a week managing code updates, backend scripts, and daily web maintenance internally was eating up valuable corporate time.
With an academic background in electronic design and programming, Geoff possessed the literal knowledge to write code, but lacked the operational hours to act as a full-time web developer while trying to lead his engineering department.
“I started originally on just the hosting package and then I came to the conclusion that actually, if I wanted to free myself up to look after the development team, we needed a more sensible solution going forward that didn’t involve me being too heavily involved in the website. It gives us flexibility if anything goes wrong and I’m on holiday… we’ve got access to a team of 30-odd of you guys to sort out the problems for us.”
– Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, Kitronik
To hand off this operational overhead, Kitronik added BigScoots Website Maintenance & Engineering Services to their plan, transforming their relationship into a true managed partnership. The transition yielded immediate performance returns.
“The hosting is lightning fast. I did some testing when we were on Shopify and then repeated that same testing versus standard WordPress hosting versus BigScoots hosting. Before you’d even turned all the additional caching stuff on, it was faster than Shopify was. And then the ‘Boost’ performance tier was turned on, and it was still faster.”
– Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, Kitronik
Why Currency Conversion is a Commercial Necessity
With a hyper-fast host established, an invisible financial leak emerged immediately following the live launch on WooCommerce. Kitronik runs its core ledger in British Pounds (GBP), but markets directly to global distributors who operate across regional boundaries.
For global distributors to market effectively, they must be able to view accurate, real-time localized pricing estimates. However, allowing a standard gateway to process transaction checkout in a foreign currency invokes an automatic 2% cross-border processing surcharge from card networks on top of standard payment fees. Because distributor sales run on incredibly lean wholesale margins, losing 2% on an entire order is devastating to total bottom-line profitability.
“The type of customers we’re selling to are distributors, and they need to be able to sell at the same price as we’re selling at. If they are using an overseas card, the last thing we want to do is take another 2% hit on the transaction fees.”
– Geoff Hampson, Technical Director, Kitronik
Compounding the problem, multi-currency processing broke their Xero accounting software integration, dropping orders into a manual “enquiry state” that forced the accounting department to spend 1 to 2 hours per week reconciling transactions line by line. Kitronik desperately needed a platform that would display localized pricing to global users but process the final card charge strictly in GBP.
Trial by Fire
To resolve this issue, the Kitronik team aggressively explored the existing market solutions, hitting one roadblock after another:
WooCommerce Native Multi-Currency
WooCommerce, out of the box, doesn’t currently support a multi-currency feature, which is where the payment processor WooPayments comes in.
WooPayments Multi-Currency
WooPayments gave a binary choice to showing local currency. Either show local currency and accept payment in local currency too or stick with the store base currency. Direct consultations with the WooCommerce team confirmed that even with workarounds, customers would still incur cross-border fees on foreign-issued cards, and essential features like Apple Pay and Google Pay would break completely.
YayCurrency Dead End
Geoff approached Saumya Majumder, Head of the BigScoots Maintenance & Engineering team, with the intention of implementing YayCurrency. This popular third-party plugin seemed to promise a JavaScript-based approach that wouldn’t interfere with caching.
But when the BigScoots team audited the plugin source inside a staging environment and discovered a critical architectural flaw: the plugin set active PHP cookies (yay_currency_init()) on every single page load, regardless of configuration. This completely disabled edge caching, converting a lightning-fast site into an uncacheable server bottleneck.
After weeks of struggling with canned, unhelpful support responses from the plugin vendor, BigScoots delivered a direct recommendation to reject the bloated third-party plugin completely and allow BigScoots to build a bespoke, high-performance solution from scratch. The team realized the plugin’s architecture was fundamentally incompatible with a high-performance WooCommerce environment.
The Decision to Build
With off-the-shelf options exhausted, the recommendation was clear. BigScoots would need to build a lightweight, bespoke solution designed correctly from the ground up. The core architectural strategy was simple yet powerful. Price conversion had to happen entirely in the browser on the client-side, leaving the server completely unaware and unbothered, allowing for pristine, full-page caching.
Quantifiable Success: How the Solution Works
The newly deployed custom Woo Local Pricing Display Plugin functions seamlessly through a highly optimized, client-side workflow:
Zero-Latency Location Detection: The plugin leverages Cloudflare’s built-in geolocation headers to instantly detect a visitor’s country at the edge, adding absolutely zero overhead or latency.
Intelligent Exchange Rate Caching: Live exchange rates are pulled from a reliable currency API exactly once every 24 hours and cached on the server. They are then cached within the visitor’s browser session, eliminating redundant network requests as they navigate the shop.
Real-Time Frontend Conversion: Utilizing the browser’s native number formatting APIs, prices dynamically rewrite themselves into the local currency format (e.g., €1.51, $1.30, or ¥300 with zero decimals) instantly.
Anti-Flicker Injection: To eliminate the jarring “flash of wrong prices” typical of JavaScript switchers, a micro-stylesheet injected into the document header gently blurs prices during the fraction of a second it takes to convert, rendering a smooth, imperceptible transition.
Seamless Checkout Enforcement: The plugin automatically disables all currency logic on the checkout page. Transactions are strictly processed in GBP to bypass the 2% cross-border fee, while an explicit line item clarifies the exact GBP total so customers know precisely what their bank statement will reflect.
Realized Cost Savings
With approximately £350,000 ($465,000) a year from overseas sales, the 2% fee savings has helped Kitronik realize a cost savings of around £7,000 ($9300) per year from card fees.
The Freedom to Focus
The custom plugin currently scales across 12 primary global currencies (including GBP, USD, EUR, AUD, CAD, JPY, DKK, NOK, SEK, CHF, PLN, and INR) with infrastructure in place to add more effortlessly.
By shifting away from bloated third-party plugins and adopting a modern, client-side pricing display architecture, Kitronik achieved the ultimate e-commerce balance, a fast, fully cacheable store with zero performance impacts on Core Web Vitals, no third-party licensing fees, and total protection over their international profit margins. The plugin is live in production, running smoothly, and giving Kitronik’s internal team the ultimate peace of mind to scale globally.
